Course information

  • Course type: This class is in-person. Recordings of all lectures will be made available to enrolled students through UCSD's podcasting system. See details in the syllabus.
  • Catalog description: Rounding and discretization errors. Calculation of roots of polynomials and nonlinear equations. Interpolation. Approximation of functions.
  • Prerequisites: MATH 170A. You should have solid calculus knowledge (there will be proofs), you should know basic programming (as taught in MATH170A). See the syllabus for details.
  • Textbook: D. Kincaid and W. Cheney, Numerical Analysis: Mathematics of Scientific Computing, Third Edition. Lecture notes will be available as well. The lecture notes are an addition to the textbook, they do not replace it.
  • Piazza: We will be using Piazza for course related questions. Please see the Piazza website. All enrolled students have been signed up.

Note that all discussion sections cover the same material, so it is enough to join one of the discussion sections.

You may attend the office hours of any and all instructors, regardless of discussion section enrollment.

Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended!

Lecture notes, homework, discussion sections

Lecture notes will be made available on Canvas under Files.

There will be weekly homework. See the syllabus for details.

Discussion section problems will be posted on Canvas a few days before discussion sections take place. You should try to attempt the problems yourself before joining discussion sections (this will help you solve the homework). Solutions to the problems will also be posted to Canvas afterwards.
