Textbook Homework

These assignments will not be turned in and will be not graded; however, certain exam questions are based on textbook homework problems, so understanding the solutions to these problems should help you perform better on the exams.

Answers to select exercises will be posted to the class Piazza page. The exercises listed in [brackets] are optional. They often require a bit more thought than the rest of the exercises.

The list of homework assignments is subject to revision during the term. Please check this page regularly for updates.

Homework Zero     (No due date)
  • Section 1.3: 1-7, 11, 15, 17, 19

Reading: Chapter 1 Sections 1 - 3. We will not discuss these sections in class, but they introduce several key ideas that we will revisit throughout the course.

Homework 1     (Due Fri, Oct 4)
  • Section 2.1: 1c, 3c, 4c, 6c, 14, 15, 20, 31
  • Section 2.2: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9a, 17a, 19a, [30(abcde), 32b]
  • Section 2.3: 13, 15, 17a, 18a
  • Section 2.4: 1, 5, 14, 15, [27, 28]

Reading:  Chapter 2, Sections 1-4. We will not spend much time in class discussing 2.3 (Modeling with First Order Equations), but this section gives valuable insight into why exactly we want to study differential equations and find their solutions.

Homework 2     (Due Fri, Oct 11)
  • Section 2.5: 3, 12, 13, [16, 22, 23]
  • Section 2.6: 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 15, [20, 22]
  • Section 3.1: 1, 2, 3, 9, 16, 18, 20, 23

Reading: Chapter 2, Sections 5 and 6. You can skip "Integrating Factors" (pages 99-100) in Section 2.6. Also read Chapter 3, Section 1.

Homework 3     (Due Fri, Oct 18)
  • Section 3.2: 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 13, 14, 24
  • Section 3.3: 8, 9, 15, 19, 21, 22, 27, 29, [34, 36]
  • Section 3.4: 1, 2, 8, 11, 12, 14, 23, 25

Reading: Chapter 3, Sections 2-4.

Homework 4     (Due Fri, Oct 25)
  • Section 3.5: 1, 6, 8, 9, 16, 17
  • Section 3.6: 7, 10, 13, 17

Reading:  Chapter 3, Sections 5 and 6. Pay special attention to Table 3.5.1 on page 182. We may not have time to deal with each case in class. In 3.6, the emphasis is on learning to correctly use the formulas in Theorem 3.6.1.

Homework 5     (Due Fri, Nov 1)
  • Section 7.1: 1, 5, 7, 11, 12, [13]
  • Section 7.2: 2, 10, 22, 23

Reading:  Chapter 7, Sections 1 and 2. We will restrict our discussion of matrices to the 2x2 case, so whenever the book makes general statements in Chapter 7, you can always think of them in terms of 2x2 matrices.

Homework 6     (Due Fri, Nov 8)
  • Section 7.3: 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 21
  • Section 7.4: 4, 6, 7
  • Section 7.5: 1a, 2a, 3a, 15, 16, [24, 27]

Reading:  Chapter 7, Sections 3 - 6. We will not explicitly discuss 7.3, but we will cover the material as part of the 7.2 and 7.4 lectures. As before, we will consider only 2x2 systems.
