Online Homework

Online homework will be done using WebAssign.  (Login: https://www.webassign.net/login.html)
Your username is the part of your UCSD email before the @ symbol.
Your institution is "ucsd" (lowercase letters).

If you were enrolled (or were on a waitlist) as of January 3rd, then you would have received an email at your UCSD email address. Make sure to check your spam folder. If you cannot find the email, then try resetting your password.
If you enrolled (or were added to a waitlist) after January 3rd, then you need to email the coordinator from your UCSD email account so that you can be added to WebAssign manually.

Syllabus Quiz: The Syllabus Quiz can be found in WebWork. It has 10 question, each one multiple choice or True/False. You have one attempt per question. The quiz is "open syllabus," so you may have the syllabus open when you take the quiz. The Syllabus Quiz is due on the Friday of Week 2 and will be counted towards your homework grade.

Late Sumbissions: It is possible to request an automatic extension of the due date (of 7 days); however, there are penalties for late submissions. Late submissions earn a maximum of 50% of their total score. This penalty applies only to exercises submitted after the due date and not to those already submitted before the due date.

Textbook Homework

These assignments will not be turned in and will be not graded; however, certain exam questions are based on textbook homework problems, so understanding the solutions to these problems should help you perform better on the exams.
(Also, if you seek help from the instructor or TAs, they may do these problems instead of the online problems.)

This list is subject to revision during the term. Please check regularly for updates. (Last updated 10 Jan 2016)

  • Section 5.5:   5, 17, 23, 28, 29, 33, 39, 40, 41

Reading: Sections 5.2-5.5. These sections were covered in Math 20A, and consequently this is review. Mathematics builds on previous concepts, and without a good understanding of these sections, you will struggle with the remainder of the course.

Homework 1     (Online HW due Thu, Jan 14 Sat, Jan 16)
  • Section 5.6:  7, 11

      Challenge Problems: 42, 73

Reading: Sections 5.6-5.7. Note that there are many exercises for Section 5.7. Substitution is one of the most basic and most useful methods available for evaluating integrals. It is important that you become well-versed in its use and a good way to do that is by doing as many exercises as possible.

      Challenge Problems: 77, 89

Reading: Sections 6.1-6.3 and Section 7.1. The topic of Section 7.1 ("Integration by Parts") is the "other basic method" for evaluating integrals. Make sure you are comfortable using it, because you will see it again and again in your mathematics courses.
