Homework

Please work carefully, and show the steps in your calculations, not just the final answer. Your solutions will be graded both for completeness and correctness. Because the department has limited resources available for homework grading, not every problem will be graded. Instead, a selection of problems will be chosen each week to be graded.

You are allowed to work with others when solving homework problems, but you must turn in solutions written in your own words. Copying a solution verbatim from another student is considered a violation of the  Academic Integrity Policy.

Homework must be turned in via the Homework Dropbox in the basement of AP&M.
Use the Dropbox with your TA's name on it.

All work must be on full-sized notebook paper and all pages must be stapled together.

Late assignments will not be accepted, but the lowest homework assignment score will be dropped at the end of the quarter.

The upper right corner of each assignment must include:

  • Your full name (last name first)
  • Your PID
  • Your discussion section (A01, A02, etc.)
  • Homework assignment number

Homework 1     (Due Wed, Jan 15 at 11 am)

Reading: Read all of Chapter 1 (it is only 15 pages long). In Chapter 2, read Sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3.

Reading:  Read Sections 3.1–3.4.   We will not consider hypergeometric random variables in class (or in the homework or exams), but you should read about them anyway, for your own personal enjoyment.

Homework 4     (Due Wed, Feb 12 at 3 pm)

  • Section 3.6:   2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 16

Reading:  Read Sections 3.5 and 3.6.
Homework Notes: For 3.5.2, you need to know a little about how Roulette is played.   There is a description here.
In 3.5.30, when it asks you to compute the expected value in "two different ways," you should compute E[W] using the PDF for W and E[Y^2] using the PDF for Y. (You should get the same answer for each.)

Homework 5     (Due Web, Feb 19 at 3 pm)
  • Section 3.7:   2, 3, 4, 13, 19(g), 20, 21, 22, 27, 36, 44, 45
  • Section 3.8:   2, 5, 6, 9

Reading:  Read Sections 3.7 and 3.8.   We will not derived the formulas of 3.8 in class, but you will still be expected to use them for two of the homework problems. (Use the formulas for 3.8.2 and 3.8.9.) You cannot use the formulas for 3.8.5 or 3.8.6, because Y and Y are not independent random variable. (Because they are the same random variable.)

Homework 6     (Due Wed, Feb 26 at 3 pm)

  • Section 4.3:   1, 2, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 23, 24, 26, 33

Reading:  Read Sections 3.9 and 4.3.   (Note: Independence of random variables is a topic from 3.7, but I prefer to discuss it 3.9.) Make sure you understand how to use the table of probabilities for the Standard Normal random variable that is in the back of your book.

  • Section 5.2:   1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 21

Reading:  Read Section 5.2. You might also want to read Section 3.10. That section defines Order Statistics, which we will see here. We will consider only Ymax and Ymin.

Homework 8     (Due Wed, Mar 12  FRI, Mar 14 at 3 pm)
  • Section 5.3:   1, 3, 4, 7, 19, 20
  • Section 5.4:   1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10

Reading:  Read Sections 5.3 and 5.4.
Note: For 5.3.20, use a 95% confidence interval.

Reading:  Read Sections 6.2–6.4. For 6.4.13, you will need to know the PDF for Ymax. You can find the formula for that in our class notes from when we discussed Section 5.2 (specifically MLE), or you can find it in Section 3.10 of the textbook.
