Requesting a Letter of Recommendation

Like most faculty at UCSD, I receive numerous requests for letters of recommendation. Writing a strong letter of recommendation requires a significant amount of time and thought. These guidelines help determine whether I am the right person to provide such a letter, and if I am, they ensure that I can provide you with the best possible letter. In particular, the required documents and information allow me to tailor my letter to your specific strengths.

1. Timeline

Please request a letter at least 5 weeks before your first deadline, otherwise I may not be able to write for you.

2. Eligibility for a Strong Letter

If you haven't completed at least one course (preferably more) with a grade of A or A+, a reading seminar, or a summer research project with me, I will probably not be able to write a letter for you. If I don't think I can write a strong letter, I will let you know.

3. Required Documents

If I agree to write the letter, send the supporting documents listed below, along with a list of programs you are applying to, and their deadlines.

4. Release form

Please fill out the Student Info Release Authorization Form and email it to me and to math-lor-g@ucsd.edu.

5. Reminders

If your letter has not been submitted a few days before the deadline, please send a reminder.
