Subject: MATH20C_S213_Bowers: Math 20C SS2 Final Exam Announcements
Date: September 5, 2013 9:49:35 AM PDT

Dear Class,

The final exam is almost upon us and I wanted to make some final announcements:

1. The exam will cover all topics discussed in class up to and including 15.1 and 15.2. It will not, however,
include anything from 15.3 or 15.4.

2. The exam will have 8 questions. Four questions will come from the first three weeks of class and four will
come from the last two weeks of class.

3. You may use one sheet of handwritten notes. You may use both sides. Photocopies or scans are not allowed.

4. Bring your photo ID to the final exam.

5. WebWork scores have been posted to Ted. You should check your WebWork scores, as well as your Midterm Exam
scores, to make sure they are what you expect them to be. If there are any mistakes in the recorded scores,
they must be corrected before final grades are submitted. If there is an error in a recorded Midterm Exam
score, bring your graded Midterm Exam to your TA. (You must have the actual, physical object.) If there is a
mistake in your WebWork score, you should contact me.

6. I have posted a survey to Ted. This is an anonymous survey about the online homework system. I want to
know about your experiences so I can decide if we should use WebWork again. (The survey has no effect on your
course grade.)

Good luck tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Doc Bowers

Subject: MATH20C_S213_Bowers: Math 20C Section Numbers
Date: August 13, 2013 10:20:07 PM PDT

One last thing! Make sure you know your discussion section number. You will need to put it on your exam.
Otherwise we will not know where to return your exam on Thursday!

Sincerely,
Doc Bowers

Subject: MATH20C_S213_Bowers: Math 20C: Exam 1
Date: August 13, 2013 6:02:04 PM PDT

Dear Class,

Some of you may have noticed a sign on the door of our classroom saying that Pepper Canyon Hall will be
closed tomorrow for fire sprinkler maintenance. Facilities Management has assured me that this only applies
to the sprinkler system. The lecture halls should be open tomorrow, as usual.

Just a reminder: The exam covers Chapter 12. We will take the exam 2:00-2:50 and then have lecture 3:00-3:50.
The exam is four questions, one question per page. You may not use any notes, but you may use a calculator.
You do not need a calculator, however. You do not need a Blue Book.

Sincerely,
Doc Bowers

Subject: MATH20C_S213_Bowers: Math 20C: Week 2 Announcements
Date: August 13, 2013 7:50:40 AM PDT

Dear Class,

I just want to remind everyone of a few things:

1. Homework 1 is due tonight (Tuesday) at 11:00 pm. Solutions will be made available by WebWork at 11:05 pm.

2. Piazza is an online discussion forum where you can use mathematical symbols. You can post questions
anonymously and read questions and answers posted by other people. The Piazza page for our class can be
found here: https://piazza.com/ucsd/other/math20c/home

3. Solutions to the textbook homework and the old exams are posted in Piazza under "Resources":
https://piazza.com/ucsd/other/math20c/resources

4. Midterm 1 is on Wednesday. We will take the exam 2:00-2:50 and then have lecture 3:00-3:50. The exam will
cover Sections 12.1-12.5. You can use a calculator, but notes are not allowed:

Subject: MATH20C_S213_Bowers: Math 20C Summer Session Two
Date: August 2, 2013 10:34:27 PM PDT

Dear Students,

You are receiving this email because you are currently enrolled in Math 20C during Summer Session 2,
which starts on Monday, August 5. I want to direct you to the course website, which can be found here:
http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~abowers/20css2/index.html

On the course website, you will find a course calendar (with the topics listed day-by-day), the class
syllabus, information about exams, copies of exams from a previous quarter, a list of homework problems,
and other information.

There are a few items we should talk about right now:

**Item 1: Online Homework.

We will be using an online homework system called WebWork. This system is open source, which means it
will not cost you anything. You get *UNLIMITED ATTEMPTS* to do each problem until the due date. Once
the due date is reached, however, solutions to the online homework problems will be made available, so
no homework will be accepted late. If you are receiving this email (and so are currently registered
for the course), you can log into WebWork using your UCSD username. Instructions can be found on the
class website here:
http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~abowers/20css2/webwork.html

**Item 2: Paper-and-Pen Homework.

I will assign homework out of the textbook, but this will not be collected or graded. These problems
should guide your studies and often times exam question are based on textbook questions. Solutions to
these homework problems will be made available via the course Piazza page. (See Item 3.)

**Item 3: Piazza.

This term we will be using Piazza for class discussion. The system is designed to get you help fast and
efficiently from classmates, the TAs, and myself. Rather than emailing questions to the teaching staff,
I encourage you to post your questions on Piazza. You can find our class Piazza page here:
https://piazza.com/ucsd/other/math20c/home

You should shortly receive an email from Piazza with instructions to activate your account, if you do not
have one already.

**Item 4: Course Calendar.

Class will meet Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 2 - 4 pm. Discussion Sections will meet on Thursday. Please
note that there is no discussion section on Thursday, August 8 (week1) and there is no class scheduled for
Monday, September 2 (week 5).

Sincerely,
Adam Bowers
