Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ is specifically for Math 11. For other courses, the answers may be different. You should check the FAQ
for those specific courses by going to their webpages.

Can I use a "cheat sheet" on the exams?

You will not be permitted to use any notes or your book on the exams, but you will be provided with a list of formulas.   (See the  "Exams"  web page for the list of formulas you will be given.)

Can I have extra credit?

There is no extra credit for this course (or any course that I teach). It is imperative that you try your best on each homework assignment, lab assignment, and exam.

Can I take the exam at an alternate time?

Exams will not be offered at alternate times and make-up exams will not be given. However, if you miss a midterm exam because of extraordinary circumstances, such as a serious illness or family emergency, and document the circumstances, then you may substitute your final exam score for the missed exam. If you cannot take the final exam at the required time, then you should not enroll in this class.

Note: If you have a documented disability or must miss the exam for a university sponsored activity, then arrangements can be made using the standard procedures. However, no students are allowed to take an exam early. If a student is entitled to accommodation, it will only be offered after the scheduled exam time and during normal Mathematics Department business hours (8:00 am to 4:30 pm).

Can I turn in my homework or lab assignments after the deadline?

Late online homework assignments will be accepted at a reduced score. Computer labs will be accepted one day late with a 3-point penalty but will not be accepted more than one day late. Exceptions are the first lab (which can be submitted up to five days late with a 1-point penalty) and the last lab (which will not be accepted late). No accommodations will be made on homework or computer labs. Please understand that accepting late work is unfair to other students.

Can I drop my lowest homework or lab grade?

No homework or lab grades will be dropped. It is important that you do every assignment and that you try your best on each one. Homework and lab assignments are designed to improve your understanding of the material and increase your familiarity with the techniques used in solving statistical problems.

Will the exam grades be curved?

The exam grades will not be curved. At the end of the quarter, after the numerical grades have been computed (according to the formula on the  "Course Syllabus" ), letter grades will be assigned based on your performance relative to the class in such a way that the average grade for the course is likely to be a B-.
