Homework

There are two types of homework assignments in this course, pen-and-paper/Gradescope homework (which will be posted to Canvas and submitted using Gradescope) and online homework (which will be done using WebAssign).

Gradescope Homework

Homework assignments will be posted to Canvas throughout the quarter. The homework will be submitted directly to Gradescope by the students.

Gradescope Login:   Log into Gradescope using the "Gradescope" link in Canvas.

The name of our Gradescope course is "MATH10B_SP20_B00". All students enrolled in the course are automatically enrolled in this Gradescope course. (But make sure to access Gradescope using the link in Canvas the first time you log in.)

You will submit your own homework assignments in this course. Gradescope has provided a helpful guide to scanning and submitting your assignment as a PDF.

Guidelines for submission through Gradescope:

  • Submissions must be PDF files.
  • If your homework is handwritten, you must upload a scanned document.
  • You may type your homework (using LaTeX, for example) and save your file as a PDF.
  • You may write your solutions using a tablet device.
  • All homework is due at 11:00 P.M.
  • Gradescope will ask you to match each of the exercises with the page on which your solution for that exercise appears.
  • For more information, download the Gradescope how-to PDF.

Due Dates:   All homework is due at 11:00 P.M. We will allow the first homework (only) to be submitted up to two days late (without penalty). This is to allow for the fact that students may be unfamiliar with the system and may experience some technical issues during the first submission. But this is a one-time only rule. After the first homework, no homework will be accepted late. Please understand that exceptions will not be made because it is unfair to the other students and may cause an undue burden to the grader.

Academic Integrity:   All homework that you turn in should be your own work. Passing off the work of another as your own is a serious academic integrity violation. You are allowed to consult with other students in the class, but the work you turn in should be written by you, in your own words. Copying homework from another student or from any other sources (including online sources) is not allowed.

Online Homework

Online homework will be done using WebAssign. You will access WebAssign directly from Canvas. You do not need a "Class Key". Access to WebAssign is given to enrolled students automatically. (If you enrolled after the first day of classes, it might take a day or two before you make it into the system.)

Access Codes:  To get an access code for WebAssign, you can either (1) purchase the textbook from the UCSD Bookstore, which comes bundled with a multi-term WebAssign access code, or (2) purchase ELECTRONIC ONLY access from the WebAssign website. If you already have a multi-term access code (because you took Math 10A last quarter, for example) then you may use the same code. If it does not work automatically, you may need to contact Customer Support.

Logging In:  You will access WebAssign through Canvas.

The first time you log in to WebAssign, you may be asked to create a password. You may also be asked to create a Cengage account, or to link your WebAssign account to a preexisting Cengage account, if you already have one. (Cengage is the company that owns WebAssign.) For more information, consult the WebAssign help files.

Complimentary access to Cengage Unlimited: Cengage, the publisher of the Math 10B textbook, is promising free access to Cengage Unlimited for the Spring term. Cengage Unlimited provides access to Cengage's "entire catalog of online textbooks and homework solutions", and that includes that Math 10B textbook and online homework. For more information, see the following link:

https://www.cengage.com/coursepages/CU_Access_Spring

For our class, use "Option 1: If your course is integrated into Canvas or Blackboard LMS" because our WebAssign is integrated into Canvas (using what they call Advanced Integration).

Homework Score: We will have online homework for 15 sections from the book, grouped into six assignments.

Assignment 1:  4.8 (24 points), 5.1 (06 points)
Assignment 2:  5.2 (15 points), 5.3 (15 points)
Assignment 3:  5.4 (10 points), 5.5 (20 points)
Assignment 4:  5.6 (10 points), 5.7 (10 points), 5.10 (10 points)
Assignment 5:  6.1 (13 points), 6.2 (07 points), 6.5 (10 points)
Assignment 6:  7.1 (05 points), 7.3 (20 points), 7.4 (05 points)

(There is no online homework for Section 7.2 or Section 7.5, but there may be Gradescope homework for these sections.) Each assignment is worth a total of 30 points. This means there are 180 points possible in total. However, the maximum homework score is 170 points. This means that you don't have to do all of the problems in order to get 100%. Any score 170 or better will earn a score of 100%.

Due Dates:  All online homework assignments are due at 11:00 P.M. on the date listed in Canvas/WebAssign. Please be aware that it is not possible to submit your homework after the due date. The first homework is due on Sunday instead of Friday in order to match the "up to two days late" rule that we have for the Gradescope homework.

Additional Textbook Problems (for Practice)

These assignments will not be turned in and will be not graded; however, certain exam questions are based on textbook homework problems, so understanding the solutions to these problems should help you perform better on the exams.
