Old News Seminar
Old News Seminar
Updated 12/07/22
Logistics
- Venue: HSS-5009
- Time: Mondays, 1-2pm
- Description: This is a graduate student seminar, where we discuss 'old' papers in algebraic geometry. The meaning of old is vague, but a working definition would be pre-2000.
Curve Napkin Math
- Speaker: Patrick Girardet
- Date: November 7th
- Abstract: I will present some basic results in the theory of automorphisms and special divisors of curves.
GIT 201
- Speaker: Jacob Keller
- Date: October 31st
- Abstract: I will follow up on my FFT talk about GIT by discussing the Luna étale slice theorem and stability for points in linear representations of a group.
(Mixed) Motives
- Speaker: Shubhankar Sahai
- Date: October 24th
- Abstract: I will try to explain Deligne's philosophy of (mixed) motives as compatible system of realisations equipped with a weight filtration. As an example I will explain the analogy between mixed Hodge theory and weights in \ell-adic cohomology as described in Deligne's 1970 ICM talk. Discussions will be borrowed from the first two chapters of Deligne's paper Le Groupe Fondamental de la Droite Projective Moins Trois Points and his ICM talk Théorie de Hodge 1.
Grassmannians beyond Schubert calculus
- Speaker: Shubham Sinha
- Date: October 17th
- Abstract: I will briefly describe several interesting invariants associated with Grassmannians over \mathbb{C}. These include curve-counting invariants such as Quantum Cohomology, K-theoretic invariants, and the derived category.
Further Pathologies in Algebraic Geometry
- Speaker: Shubham Saha
- Date: October 10th
- Abstract: We'll go over the Hilbert Scheme of space curves with degree 14 and genus 24 and show that it has a non-reduced component along with other bizarre things about it. This space was also studied by Harris and Morrison and is discussed in their book - "Moduli of Curves", some of the discussion shall be further borrowed from here as well.
