Course Objectives & Grading Policies

Textbook: Discrete Mathematics with Applications (Second Edition) by Susanna Epp.

Course Objectives

We plan to cover chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10. These cover Boolean logic; first-order (quantifier) logic; proof methods, including proof by induction; elementary number theory; set theory notation; and functions and relations.

Grading policy:

Grades will be based on a combination of homework, quizes, one midterm and the final exam.
Homework assignments: Weekly assignments, due in Tuesday in class. Due to time constraints, it is possible that not all homework problems will be graded, but we will record whether homeworks are completed.
Quizes: Eight (8) quizes --- approximately 20 minutes long. Held in the Wednesday meeting.
Midterm:Thursday, May 6. Cumulative, through section 4.2.
Course grades are calculated from: Homework - 10%, Quizes - 30%, Midterm - 30%, Final exam - 30%. Your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped.

Homework Assignments

Some of the problems have answers in the back of the book. Most other problems will have answers posted on the web after the due date. If your browser can handle postscript or pdf files, that will give you the best looking downloaded files. Otherwise the latex2html or the gif files will give acceptable quality documents. (Often latex2html cannot be created because of special formatting, and gif files are available in those cases.)
Graded homeworks may be picked up from Peter Couperus during office hours.

Quizes (Tentative schedule)

Practice quizes for a past class of Math 15A may be viewed at Professor Williamson's web page (follow the link to CSE 20). Please note that these quizes may not correspond to the quizes given in our class!
The answers will look best in postscript or pdf format, if your browser can handle them. For other browsers, try the latex2html format or when LaTeX2html is unable to successfully convert the file, then try the "gif" format.
Graded quizes will be returned during lecture, usually on the following Tuesday. If you miss that lecture, then the graded quizes can be obtained from Peter Couperus.
