Attending the lecture is a fundamental part of the course; you are responsible for material presented
in the lecture whether or not it is discussed in the textbook. You should expect questions on
the exams that will test your understanding of concepts discussed in the lecture. Please make sure your

Course Description

Matrix algebra, Gaussian elimination, determinants. Linear and affine
subspaces, bases of Euclidean spaces. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors,
quadratic forms, orthogonal matrices, diagonalization of symmetric
matrices. Applications. Computing symbolic and graphical solutions using
Matlab.

- Math 20C with a grade of C– or better.

- David C. Lay, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 4th
edition, Pearson, 2012.

Homework Assignments

Homework will be assigned weekly.
The lowest of your homework assignment grades will be droped.
Please turn in your HW assignments in the homwork drop box.
No late homework will be accepted for any reasons.
Please write your names, id nubmers, and section numbers on your homework,
and staple together your homework pages.
Matlab Assignments
-
Matlab is a serious part of this couse. Every student is supposed to learn how to use Matlab.
-
MATLAB is installed on all computers in the basement room B349 of AP&M, where MATLAB tutors
will be available in Matlab sessions.
For tutor hours, please click the third button on the left column of
Matlab website.
Please note that regular MATLAB sections will NOT be held. If you prefer, you may
purchase your own copy of MATLAB, but please be advised that the MATLAB assignments have only been
tested on ACS computers.

There will be five Matlab assignments and a final exam.

The worst of your Matlab assignment grades will be dropped.

Calculators

You may use any handheld calculator (but not a computer, PDA or any device with network capability)
during exams; however, you will be expected to show all relevant computational steps: No credit will
be given for unsupported answers gotten directly from a calculator.
Exams
-
There will be two (2) midterm exams given during the regular lecture hour.
You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with
you to each midterm exam. Please make sure your cell phone is turned off and put away during exams.

Midterm I - February 1, Friday, 2013.

Midterm II - February 27, Wednesday, 2013.

Final - March 22, 2013, 11:30am - 2:29 pm.
Make-up exam policy
- There will be no make-up exams for this couse.
If you miss an exam for any reason, then your
course grade will be computed with the final exam counting 60% of your weighted average.
Grading

The final course grade will be based on homework assignments,
midterm and final exams, Matlab assignments and exams.
Your final grade will be the best of the following two weighted averages.

10% Homework, 20% Midterm Exam I, 20% Midterm Exam II, 40% Final Exam,
10% Matlab ( = assignments 5% + exams 5% )

10% Homework, 20% best Midterm Exam, 60% Final Exam,
10% Matlab ( = assignments 5% + exams 5% )
In addition, you must pass the final examination in order to pass the course.

The grades will be curved within the entire class.
