Math 4C - Precalculus for Science and Engineering (4 units), Lecture A, Fall 2020

Course Description: Review of polynomials. Graphing functions and relations: graphing rational functions, effects of linear changes of coordinates. Circular functions and right triangle trigonometry. Reinforcement of function concept: exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Vectors. Conic sections. Polar coordinates. (No credit given if taken after Math 1A/10A or 2A/20A. Two units of credit given if taken after Math 3C.)
Prerequisites: Math Placement Exam qualifying score or Math 3C with a grade of C- or better.
Textbooks: Precalculus: An Investigation of Functions by David Lippman and Melonie Rasmussen, second edition, available online for free here.
Homework: Written homework will be due roughly every Friday night via Gradescope. Here is a video showing how to submit homework, and you can read detailed instructions here. Assignments will be posted in the table below. Only a few problems from each assignment will be graded. The grader will be looking for both correctness and the appropriate justification. No late homework will be accepted. However, the lowest homework score will be dropped.

- Final Exam: Cumulative. Tuesday, December 15, 11:30am-2:30pm PT
Quiz and Final Exam Policies: All quizzes and the final exam will be submitted through Gradescope. The quiz/exam periods were scheduled to be slightly longer than the actual time necessary to complete the work. The extended time is meant to act as a buffer in case you have any technical issues uploading your work. Work will be graded for both clarity and correctness. You may use your notes and the textbook. No other form of assistance is allowed (e.g. calculators, internet resources, software, other people, etc.) Any proof of academic dishonesty will be reported. No make-up quizzes/exams will be given. However, the lowest quiz score will be dropped. If you cannot take the quizzes or final exam at the scheduled time because of a difference in time zone, fill out the form here by October 9th. Requests made after this date will be denied.

Grading: Final grades will be calculated using the following grading scheme and grade cutoffs:

10% Homework, 10% Supplemental Instruction attendance, 60% Quizzes (the best 4 quiz scores will each count towards 15% of the final grade), 20% Final Exam
