• Course Description: Functions and their graphs. Linear and polynomial functions, zeroes, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic, trigonometric functions and their inverses. Emphasis on understanding algebraic, numerical and graphical approaches making use of graphing calculators. (No credit given if taken after Math 4C, 1A/10A, or 2A/20A.) Three or more years of high school mathematics or equivalent recommended.


• Prerequisites: Math Placement Exam qualifying score, or ACT Math score of 22 or higher, or SAT Math score of 600 or higher.


• Textbook: Precalculus by Jay Abramson, which is available online for free. We will also refer to Section 7.6 from Intermediate Algebra by Lynn Marecek and Andrea Honeycutt Mathis, which is available online for free.


• Homework: Homework will be due roughly every Monday at 11:59pm PT through Canvas. The homework (from the free online program MyOpenMath) can be found under Assignments or Modules in Canvas. Each homework will consist of several assignments corresponding to certain sections of the textbook. No homework scores will be dropped, but you may submit late work using Late Passes. A Late Pass extends the due date of a single section assignment by 24 hours. You have a total of 20 Late Passes to use in this course.


• Midterms and Final Exam: All exams will take place in-person at the times stated below. Your work will be graded for clarity, correctness, and the appropriate justification. You may use one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten, double-sided sheet of notes during each exam. No other resources are allowed (e.g. calculators, phones, books, other people, etc.) Any proof of academic dishonesty will be reported.
  • Midterm Exam 1: Sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 3.2. Wednesday, February 1, between 6pm and 7:50pm PT in CTL 0125
  • Midterm Exam 2: Sections 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, polynomial and rational inequalities, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7. Wednesday, February 22, between 6pm and 7:50pm PT in CTL 0125
  • Final Exam: Cumulative. Saturday, March 18, between 3pm and 6pm PT. Location TBA


• Grading: Final grades will be calculated as the maximum of the following two grading schemes:

  The following are the final grade cutoffs. For example, if you earn an overall percentage of 88%, you are guaranteed to receive at least a B+ in the class.
