• Course Description: Functions and their graphs. Linear and polynomial functions, zeroes, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic, trigonometric functions and their inverses. Emphasis on understanding algebraic, numerical and graphical approaches making use of graphing calculators. (No credit given if taken after Math 4C, 1A/10A, or 2A/20A.) Three or more years of high school mathematics or equivalent recommended.


• Prerequisites: Math Placement Exam qualifying score, or ACT Math score of 22 or higher, or SAT Math score of 600 or higher.


• Textbook: Precalculus by Jay Abramson, which is available online for free.


• Homework: Homework will be due roughly every Friday at 11:59pm PT through Canvas. The homework (from the free online program MyOpenMath) can be found under Assignments or Modules in Canvas. Each homework will consist of several assignments corresponding to certain sections of the textbook. No homework scores will be dropped, but you may submit late work using Late Passes. A Late Pass extends the due date of a single section assignment by 24 hours. You have a total of 20 Late Passes to use in this course.


• Miscellaneous Assignments: Some miscellaneous work will be assigned, such as a welcome form, practice quizzes, etc., that will be graded only on completion.


• Quizzes and Final Exam: All quizzes and the final exam will be a combination of Canvas quiz problems and written problems (with work to be written by hand). For each quiz, you will have 30 minutes to either complete Canvas quiz problems or submit handwritten problems to Gradescope, to be completed within the time period of 8am to 11pm PT on the quiz date. Here is a video showing how to submit work through Gradescope, and you can read detailed instructions here. The final exam will be similar, but you will have one hour to complete Canvas quiz problems and two hours to submit handwritten problems to Gradescope, all to be completed within the time period of 8am-11pm PT on the final exam date. Work for the written problems will be graded for clarity, correctness, and the appropriate justification. You may use your notes and the textbook. No other form of assistance is allowed (e.g. calculators, internet resources, software, other people, etc.) Any proof of academic dishonesty will be reported. No make-up quizzes/exams will be given. However, the lowest online quiz score and the lowest written quiz score will be dropped.


• Grading: Final grades will be calculated using the following grading scheme:
  • 5% Lecture Attendance
  • 3% Discussion Section Attendance
  • 2% Miscellaneous Assignments
  • 25% Homework
  • 15% Online Quizzes
  • 20% Written Quizzes
  • 15% Online Final Exam
  • 15% Written Final Exam
  The following are the final grade cutoffs. For example, if you earn an overall percentage of 88%, you are guaranteed to receive at least a B+ in the class.
