Course Description: Functions and their graphs. Linear and polynomial functions, zeroes, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic, trigonometric functions and their inverses. Emphasis on understanding algebraic, numerical and graphical approaches making use of graphing calculators. (No credit given if taken after Math 4C, 1A/10A, or 2A/20A.) Three or more years of high school mathematics or equivalent recommended.

Prerequisites: Math Placement Exam qualifying score, or ACT Math score of 22 or higher, or SAT Math score of 600 or higher.

Textbooks: Precalculus by Jay Abramson, available online for free here.

Homework: Both online and written homework will be due roughly every Tuesday at 11:59pm PT through Canvas. Information about each homework assignment can be found in the table below, along with detailed instructions on how to submit each assignment. Online homework (from the free online program MyOpenMath) can be found under Assignments in Canvas. Each homework will consist of several assignments corresponding to certain sections of the textbook. No online homework scores will be dropped, but you may submit late work using Late Passes. A Late Pass extends the due date of a single section assignment by 24 hours. You have a total of 20 Late Passes to use in this course. While online homework is meant to give you instantaneous feedback, written homework is meant to give you feedback on the quality of your solutions. The goal is to better prepare you for quizzes and the final exam. Written homework is assigned in the table below and will be submitted through Gradescope, which you can find in Canvas as well. Here is a video showing how to submit work through Gradescope, and you can read detailed instructions here. The grader will be looking for both correctness and the appropriate justification. No late written homework will be accepted. However, the lowest written homework score will be dropped. The online homework and the written homework will each count towards 10% of your final grade, for a total of 20%.

Quizzes and Final Exam: All quizzes and the final exam will be posted and submitted through Gradescope, which you can access through Canvas. The quiz/exam periods were scheduled to be slightly longer than the actual time necessary to complete the work. The extended time is meant to act as a buffer in case you have any technical issues uploading your work. Work will be graded for both clarity and correctness. You may use your notes and the textbook. No other form of assistance is allowed (e.g. calculators, internet resources, software, other people, etc.) Any proof of academic dishonesty will be reported. No make-up quizzes/exams will be given. However, the lowest quiz score will be dropped. If you cannot take the quizzes or final exam at the scheduled time because of a difference in time zone, fill out the form here by October 1st. Requests made after this date will be denied.

Grading: Final grades will be calculated using the following grading scheme:

20% Homework, 10% Supplemental Instruction attendance, 45% Quizzes, 25% Final Exam

You will receive 100% for SI attendance if you attend at least 7 SI sessions. Although discussion attendance is mandatory, it will only affect your grade in a positive way: An additional 2% will be added to the total percentage for attending at least 8 discussion sections, 1% will be added for attending 7 discussion sections, and no extra credit will be given if you attend fewer than 7 discussion sections.
The following are the final grade cutoffs. For example, if you earn an overall percentage of 88%, you are guaranteed to receive at least a B+ in the class.
