Math 2 - Introduction to College Mathematics (4 units), Lecture B, Winter 2022

• Lecture: Lectures will take place live over Zoom MWF 10am-10:50am PT. If we fall behind the lecture schedule, additional pre-recorded videos may be provided. Visit Canvas for the Zoom link. The recordings and lecture notes will be available on Canvas.


• Discussion: Discussion section attendance is mandatory. We expect that you will be an active participant in all discussions: think about the topics or questions being discussed, work on problems being discussed, ask questions, discuss problems with your classmates, etc. There should be only eight discussions to attend in total (because of two Monday holidays), but two absences will be excused.

• Supplemental Instruction: Supplemental instruction session attendance is mandatory. We expect that you will be an active participant in all SI sessions: think about the topics or questions being discussed, work on problems being discussed, ask questions, discuss problems with your classmates, etc. There should be ten SI sessions to attend in total, but three absences will be excused. • Course Description: A highly adaptive course designed to build on students' strengths while increasing overall mathematical understanding and skill. This multimodality course will focus on several topics of study designed to develop conceptual understanding and mathematical relevance: linear relationships; exponents and polynomials; rational expressions and equations; models of quadratic and polynomial functions and radical equations; exponential and logarithmic functions; and geometry and trigonometry. Workload credit only-not for baccalaureate credit.


• Prerequisites: Math Placement Exam qualifying score.


• Textbooks: Algebra and Trigonometry by Jay Abramson, available online for free here.


• Homework: Homework will be due roughly every Thursday at 11:59pm PT. You are expected to read the corresponding section of the textbook prior to attending lecture and complete exercises from the textbook. The assignments will be posted on Canvas and you will submit your work through Gradescope (which you can also find on Canvas). Here is a video showing how to submit work through Gradescope, and you can read detailed instructions here. The grader will be looking for both correctness and the appropriate justification. No late written homework will be accepted. However, the lowest written homework score will be dropped.


• Quizzes: There will be a quiz roughly every Friday. The quizzes, although cumulative, will generally emphasize recent material. All quizzes will be posted and submitted through Gradescope (which you can access through Canvas). You will have 30 minutes to take each quiz, and you may take it at any time between 10am PT on Friday and 10am PT the following day (Saturday). Work will be graded for both clarity and correctness. You may use your notes and the textbook. No other form of assistance is allowed (e.g. calculators, internet resources, software, other people, etc.) Any proof of academic dishonesty will be reported. No make-up quizzes will be given. No quiz scores will be dropped. However, we will be using mastery based grading: you will have two more opportunities to retake any quiz (not the exact same problems, but the same types) in order to improve not only your score, but your ability to carry out the given learning objectives. However, given the short duration of the course, there will only be one chance to retake Quiz 7. See the quiz dates and retake quiz dates in the schedule below.


• Exams: There are three exams in the course: two midterm exams (Exam 1 and Exam 2) and the final exam. All exams will be cumulative. All exams will be posted and submitted through Gradescope (which you can access through Canvas). You will have 60 minutes to take each midterm exam, and you may take it at any time between 10am PT on Friday and 10am PT the following day (Saturday). However, the final exam must be taken during the official final exam time: Friday, March 18th from 8am to 11am PT. Your work will be graded for both clarity and correctness. You may use your notes and the textbook. No other form of assistance is allowed (e.g. calculators, internet resources, software, other people, etc.) Any proof of academic dishonesty will be reported. No make-up exams will be given. No exam scores will be dropped.


• Grading: Final grades will be calculated using the following grading scheme:
  • 6% Discussion attendance, 5% Supplemental Instruction attendance, 20% Homework, 14% Quizzes, 15% Exam 1, 15% Exam 2, 25% Final Exam
  You will receive 100% for discussion section attendance if you attend at least seven discussion sections. You will receive 100% for SI attendance if you attend at least seven SI sessions.
  The following are the final grade cutoffs. For example, if you earn an overall percentage of 88%, you are guaranteed to receive at least a B+ in the class.
