Math 103B - Modern Algebra II (4 units), Spring 2019

• Course Description: Second course in a two-quarter introduction to abstract algebra with some applications. Emphasis on rings and fields. Topics include: definitions and basic properties of rings, fields, and ideals, homomorphisms, irreducibility of polynomials. (Students may not receive credit for both Math 100B and Math 103B.)
• Prerequisites: Math 103A or Math 100A or consent of instructor.
• Textbook: A First Course in Abstract Algebra, 7th edition, by John B. Fraleigh
• Homework: Problem sets will be due roughly every week on Fridays by 3pm in the drop box located in the basement of AP&M. Links to the assignments will appear in the schedule below. No homework scores will be dropped. An assignment may be submitted two days late (by the following Monday at 3pm in the drop box) but will earn a maximum of 75% of its total score.

  • Midterm Exam 1: Friday, April 26, 1pm-1:50pm. Last names beginning with A-R: Cognitive Science Building 001. Last names beginning with S-Z: Solis Hall 109.
  • Midterm Exam 2: Friday, May 24, 1pm-1:50pm. Last names beginning with D-Z: Cognitive Science Building 001. Last names beginning with A-C: Solis Hall 109.
  • Final Exam: Thursday, June 13, 11:30am-2:30pm. Last names beginning with A-I or N-Z: Cognitive Science Building 001. Last names beginning with J-M: Cognitive Science Building 004.
• Homework and Exam Policies: No cell phones, calculators, notes, books, or any other form of assistance are allowed during exams. Once homework and exams are returned, the instructor or TA must be contacted within a week of this date if there was a mistake made in grading. No grade changes will be made after this day. Work will be graded for both clarity and correctness. No make-up exams will be given.
• Grading: Homework and exam grades will be posted on TritonEd. Final grades will be calculated as the maximum of the following two grading schemes and using the table below:
  • 20% Homework, 20% Midterm Exam 1, 20% Midterm Exam 2, 40% Final Exam
  • 20% Homework, 20% Best Midterm Score, 60% Final Exam
