Title:  Introduction to Analysis I

Textbook: Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus (Second Edition), by Kenneth A. Ross; published by Springer; copyright 2013

Subject Material:  We shall cover most of chapters 1 - 3 of the text.   A more complete list of the sections covered will be found (as they are added) on the course homework page.

Reading:  It will be expected that you read (i.e., preview) the assigned material in advance of the class period indicated by the course calendar, and then read the material more carefully after the corresponding lecture. The amount of reading is not large in quantity; however, it is heavy in conceptual content.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned on the course homework page. There will be two components to each homework assignment: graded and recommended, and both should be completed by the indicated due date.  Your homework grade will be based on the best three (3) of five (5) graded homework assignments.

Gradescope: All graded homework assignments are to be submitted via Gradescope. To log in, use the Gradescope link in the menu bar at left of the main page of your Math 142A Canvas site. To submit your assignment, follow the link to the appropriate assignment and carry out the instructions. Detailed help for using Gradescope can be found at https://help.gradescope.com/.

• Before being uploaded, assignments should be in a single pdf file, or as a picture for each question. See Gradescope's Submitting an Assignment page for more complete instructions.
• Please make sure your files are legible before submitting.  Unreadable solutions will not earn credit.

Midterm Exams:  There will be two midterm exams given during the evening on Wednesday of the fourth and eighth weeks;  see the course calendar for the dates and times of the midterm exams.

• You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to each midterm exam; no other notes (or books) will be allowed.
• No calculators (or other devices) will be allowed during the midterm exams.
• There will be no makeup midterm exams. Please see the Grading section below.

Final Examination:  The final examination will be held at the date and time stated in the course calendar and the listing for this course in the Schedule of Classes.

• It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not have a schedule conflict involving the final examination; you should not enroll in this class if you cannot take the final examination at its scheduled time.
• You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to the final examination; no other notes (or books) will be allowed.
• No calculators (or other devices) will be allowed during the final examination.

Regrade Policy:  Your exams (and homework) will be graded using Gradescope.  You will be able to request a regrade via Gradescope for a specified window of time.  Be sure to look for the email message from Gradescope that announces the regrade request window and make your request within the specified window of time; no regrade requests will be accepted after the deadline.

Grading: Your course letter grade will be based on the better of the following two (2) weighted averages. Note that the homework grade will be based on your best four (3) of six (5) assignments.

• 20% Homework (best 3 of 5),  25% Midterm Exam 1,  25% Midterm Exam 2,   30% Final Exam
• 20% Homework (best 3 of 5),  25% Best Midterm Exam,  55% Final Exam

• Your letter grade will be computed from your weighted average using the following standard scale:

  97 - 100	93 - 96	90 - 92	87 - 89	83 - 86	80 - 82	74 - 79	66 - 73	60 - 65	0 - 59

• Note:  The above scale is guaranteed; however, your instructor reserves the right to adjust the above scale to be more generous.
