Math 142A
Introduction to Analysis I
Winter 2026 Course Syllabus

Updated 3/5/26

Course:  Math 142A

Title:  Introduction to Analysis I

Credit Hours:  4

Prerequisite:  Math 31CH or Math 109, or consent of instructor

Course Description:  See the MATH 142A listing in the UC San Diego online course catalog.

Textbook: Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus (Second Edition), by Kenneth A. Ross; published by Springer; copyright 2013

Subject Material:  We shall cover most of chapters 1 - 3 of the text.   A more complete list of the sections covered will be found (as they are added) on the course homework page.

Reading:  It will be expected that you read (i.e., preview) the assigned material in advance of the class period indicated by the course calendar, and then read the material more carefully after the corresponding lecture. The amount of reading is not large in quantity; however, it is heavy in conceptual content.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned on the course homework page. There will be two components to each homework assignment: graded and recommended, and both should be completed by the indicated due date.  Your homework grade will be based on the best four (4) of five (5) graded homework assignments.

Artificial Intelligence:  AI is a powerful tool. You could use it to get answers to homework questions, but please remember these two things:

  1. The purpose of homework is to exercise your understanding of the subject; using AI could rob you of that opportunity.
  2. Answers produced by AI should be checked for correctness; AI is not perfect.
If you decide to use AI, be careful to use it as a learning tool, not as a way to avoid the effort required to learn the subject. After all, the use of AI will not be permitted during exams.

Gradescope: All graded homework assignments are to be submitted via Gradescope. To log in, use the Gradescope (1.3) link in the menu bar at left of the main page of your Math 142A Canvas site. To submit your assignment, follow the link to the appropriate assignment and carry out the instructions. Detailed help for using Gradescope can be found at https://help.gradescope.com/.

Midterm Exams:  There will be two midterm exams given in the evening during the time listed in the schedule of classes. See also the course calendar for the dates and times of the midterm exams.

Final Examination:  The final examination will be held at the date and time stated in the course calendar and the listing for this course in the Schedule of Classes.

Regrade Policy:  Your exams will be graded using Gradescope (accessible via the Gradescope (1.3) link in your Math 20B Canvas site).  You will be able to request a regrade via Gradescope for a specified window of time.  Be sure to look for the email message from Gradescope that announces the regrade request window and make your request within the specified window of time; no regrade requests will be accepted after the deadline.

Administrative Deadline:  It is your responsibility to check your exam scores on Canvas and contact your TA before the end of the 10th week of the quarter to resolve recording errors.

Grading: Your course letter grade will be based on the better of the following two (2) weighted averages. Note that the homework grade will be based on your best four (4) of five (5) assignments.

OSD Accommodations:   Students requesting accommodations for this course due to a disability must provide a current Authorization for Accommodation (AFA) letter issued by the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD).  We will make every effort to arrange provide any accommodations stipulated by your AFA letter.  For more information, visit the OSD website.

Assessment Versioning:   Following UCSD (and common) practice recommended by the Academic Integrity Office,  assessments given at non-overlapping times will be comparable, but may not be identical.  This practice is meant to maintain course integrity, avoiding non-allowed collaboration (either intentional or accidental).

Academic Integrity:  Academic integrity is highly valued at UCSD and academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense.  Students involved in an academic integrity violation will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or, in very serious cases, expulsion from the university.  Your integrity has great value:  Cultivate and protect your academic integrity. For more about academic integrity and its value, visit the UCSD Academic Integrity Website.
