Math 10B Fall 2022

Homework Instructions

For each assignment, you should neatly handwrite or type your homework solutions, and present the problems in the order assigned, with the problem numbers shown clearly.

To submit your completed work, log in to Gradescope with your @ucsd.edu email (either directly or through Canvas). Here is a guide to submitting an online assignment in Gradescope. It will take some time to scan and upload your work, so start early! If you submit work early, you can always update your submission before the deadline.

Homework Problems

Numbered problems are from Calculus Volume 1 or Calculus Volume 2 (from Vol 2 unless otherwise noted).

Note: there may be some slight changes to the assigments posted below (e.g., shifting a problem to a later homework), but each assgnment will be finalized no later than one week before its due date.

Homework 1

Due Fri, Sep 30 at 2pm Pacific Time
On this assignment only, all numbered problems are from Calculus Volume 1. Problems beginning with "W" are website problems.

Review (in "Chapter 3 Review Exercies") 373, 375, 379, 387, W1-W5
Section 4.10 (Vol 1) 467, 475, 493, 495, W6-W11, 509

Review resources: if you'd like a referesher on any topic or some additional practice problems, here are a few resources: basic derivatives, trig derivatives, exponential and log derivatives, inverse trig derivatives, product rule, chain rule, geometry formulas, Mean Value Theorem, and summation notation. If you want a quick refresher on derivatives and only have time for one, I recommend reading the chain rule resource, and working through Examples 2 and 4 there.

Homework 2

Due Fri, Oct 7 at 2pm Pacific Time

Review W12-W14
Section 1.1 13, 17, 43, W15
Section 1.2 W16, W17, 63, 75, 83, 89, 107
Section 1.3 149, 151, 153, 159, 161(a),(b)
Note: there is a typo in Exercise 159 in the PDF version of the book. The upper limit of the integral should be ex and not e2.

Homework 3

Due Fri, Oct 14 at 2pm Pacific Time

Review W18, W19, 15 (§1.1), 67 (§1.2), 93 (§1.2)
Section 1.3 W20, W21, 171, 173, 185, W22
Section 1.4 223, 241, W23, W24, W25
Section 1.5 267, 275, 295* (TYPO**), 297*
*Bonus problems: because substitution for definite integrals is not on Quiz 1, I decided to make 295 and 297 bonus problems. You will receive 1 bonus point for completing one of them, and 2 bonus points for completing both.

**There is a typo for 295 in the PDF version of the book. The numerator should be t2 and not t.

Homework 4

Due Fri, Oct 21 at 2pm Pacific Time

Review W29-W32, 273 (§1.5), 307 (§1.5)
Section 1.6 323, 329, 335, 341, 355, 359, 375, 377
Section 1.7 391, 399, 431
Average value 111 (§1.2), 115 (§1.2), 161(c) (§1.3)

Homework 5

Due Fri, Oct 28 at 2pm Pacific Time

Review 113 (§1.2), W33-39
Section 2.1 1, 11, 15, 23*, 49*, 55
Section 2.2 75, 85, 83, 89*, 65*, 58

Bonus 1: You will receive 1 bonus point on HW5 if you collaborate with at least two other students in the class!

*Bonus 2: You will receive 2 additional bonus points if you complete the 4 starred problems (1/2 point each if you complete fewer). I moved these problems to bonus because I realized this homework was quite long, but I'd encourage you to do them if you have the time!

Homework 6

Due Fri, Nov 4 at 2pm Pacific Time

Review W40-W44, 155* (§1.3), 9 (§2.1)
Section 2.8 W45-W47
Section 3.1 11, 13, 15, 21, 53
*The integrals in this problem are trickier than I realized. To make it simpler, you can use the following integral without computing it yourself:
∫ cos2x dx = ½(x + sinx cosx)+C

Homework 7

Due Fri, Nov 11 at 2pm Pacific Time

Review 69 (§1.2), 99 (§2.2), W48
Section 3.1 51, 57, 43, 9, 25, W49, W50, 23
Section 3.4 W51, 189, 197, 211
Section 3.7 W52, W53

Homework 8

Due Fri, Nov 18 at 2pm Pacific Time

Review W54-W56, 47 (§3.1), W58-W59, 199 (§3.4), W60-W61
Section 3.7 347, 357, W62-W63, 373, W64-W65

Homework 9

Due Fri, Nov 25 at 2pm Pacific Time
Cancelled! Have a nice weekend :)

Homework 10

Due Fri, Dec 2 at 2pm Pacific Time

Important note: only the problems on material up to and including next Monday's lecture (Nov. 28) actually need to be turned in.
Update: Section 5.2, was not completed in Monday's lecture, so those problems do not need to be turned in.

Review W66-70, 61 (§3.1)
Section 4.1 3, 7, 15, 33
Section 4.3 123, 119, 133, 135, 151
Section 4.2 W71-W72, 89, 93
Section 5.1 1, 3, 13, 15, W73, 29
Section 5.2* W74-W76*

*Section 5.2 not turned in. (Since Section 5.2 wasn't finished in Monday's lecture, these problems won't be turned in. But Section 5.2 is still fair game for the final, so I'd definitely recommend doing these problems at some point!
