Preparing the Next Generation of Secondary Mathematics Teachers: How Pedagogy Emerges from Learning Mathematics
May 2-3, 2008
Hosted by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)
UCSD is hosting a two-day conference called "Preparing the Next Generation of Secondary Mathematics Teachers: How Pedagogy Emerges from Learning Mathematics" to bring together educators who are committed to preparing these new mathematics teachers. The conference will be held on the UCSD campus on May 2nd and 3rd, 2008 and is intended for mathematicians and mathematics educators who are involved or interested in teacher education.
The conference will be held in the First Floor Auditorium of the Natural Sciences Building at UCSD.
A major theme of this conference is to explore how effective mathematical pedagogy can emerge from the Cal Teach programs that have been developed at the University of California campuses. Various speakers will explore how the development of mathematical pedagogy is inextricably tied to the development of the teachers' mathematical knowledge. The UCSD Cal Teach group will describe how this framework has influenced the implementation of our new mathematics education minor and there will be presentations from several other University of California campuses on the key principles which guide their Cal Teach programs.
Featured speakers are:
Guershon Harel, Department of Mathematics, University of California, San Diego
John Polking, Department of Mathematics, Rice University
Boris Koichu, Department of Education in Technology and Science, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology
This conference is supported by a FIPSE grant and the UCSD Division of Physical Sciences.
