Preparing the Next Generation of Secondary Mathematics (and Science) Teachers: How Pedagogy Emerges from Learning Mathematics (and Science) April 17-18, 2009 Hosted by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) UCSD is hosting a two-day conference to bring together educators who are committed to preparing the next generation of math and science teachers. The conference will be held on the UCSD campus in April to coincide with the end of the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in San Diego. UCSD's conference is intended for mathematicians and scientists and math and science educators who are involved in or interested in teacher education. The conference will be held in the First Floor Auditorium of the Natural Sciences Building at UCSD. The main focus of this conference is the ways in which effective pedagogy emerges from a deep exploration of math and science content, especially the analysis of solution approaches to math and science problems. Various speakers will discuss how the development of math and science pedagogy is inextricably tied to the development of the teachers' mathematical and scientific knowledge. In this second year of the conference, we would like to provide additional opportunities for Cal Teach programs at our sister campuses and related programs at other institutions to present examples that illustrate the content-pedagogy link. We will also have break-out sessions to explore emerging themes and issues. Featured speakers include: William McCallum, University of Arizona Kristina Reiss, University of Munich Carl Lager, University of California, Santa Barbara Guershon Harel, University of California, San Diego This conference is supported by a FIPSE grant and the UCSD Division of Physical Sciences. Hotels offering UCSD special rates are below. You should phone the hotel and request the UCSD rate. Not all hotels offer the reduced rate on their web site.
