Babinton plot
On July 6th, 1586,
Anthony Babington wrote a long letter to Mary, Queen of Scots revealing the
details of the ‘Babington Plot.’ Babington asked for Mary’s approval and advice
to ensure the assassination of Elizabeth I.
Mary sealed her
fate by replying on July 17th. Thomas Phelippes copied the letter, added the
gallows sign, and forged a short postscript asking Babington for the names of
those involved.
September 20,
1586, Babington and Seven of his colleague conspirators were dragged to St.
Giles’ Fields and brutally executed.
