COURSE DESCRIPTION

WHAT IS MATH 104A? This is the first undergraduate course in number theory. In this course we examine arithmetic and algebraic properties of integers and their generalizations.

TEXT LeVeque, W. J. Fundamentals of Number Theory (DoverPublications Inc., 1996). You are expected to read the text BEFORE each lecture. The students enrolled in this class are expected to be familiar with the material covered in Math 109 (Mathematical Reasoning). Please read sections 1.1 and 1.5 on your own before or during the first week of classes.

EXAMS

Midterm - Monday, August 24, 10:00am, in PETER 102. Topics: Chapters 1, 2.
Final Exam - Friday, September 4, 7:00-10:00pm. Location: PETER 102. Topics: comprehensive.
No notes, textbooks, calculators are allowed during exams. No make-up exams will be given and no late homework will be accepted. Cheating on an exam results in 0 points for that exam, as well as further disciplinary action. Please read very carefully the following ACADEMIC INTEGRITY GUIDELINES.

GRADING POLICY

Midterm: 30%; Final Exam: 40%; Homework: 30%. The grading will be done on a curve, the median corresponding to a B-/C+.
