Math 183 Winter 2012
Course Syllabus

Course:  Math 183

Title:  Statistical Methods

Credit Hours:  4

Prerequisite:  Math 20C with a grade of C- or better

Catalog Description:  Introduction to probability. Discrete and continuous random variables; binomial, Poisson and Gaussian distributions. Central limit theorem. Data analysis and inferential statistics: graphical techniques, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, curve fitting.

Textbook: An Introduction to Mathematical Statistics and its Applications (5th Edition), by Larsen and Marx; published by Pearson (2012).

Subject Material:  We will cover Chapters 1 – 6 of the textbook, time permitting.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned on the course homework page and should be completed by the the indicated due date

Exams:   There will be one midterm exam (in-class) and one final exam (location to be determined).   See the course calendar for the specific dates.

Regrades:  All graded material will be returned in the discussion sections. If you wish to have your homework or exam regraded, you must return it immediately to your TA. Regrade requests will not be considered once the homework or exam leaves the room. If you do not retrieve your quiz or exam during discussion section, you must arrange to pick it up from your TA within one week after it was returned in order for any regrade request to be considered.

Grading: Your course grade will be determined by your cumulative average at the end of the term and will be based on the following scale:

A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D
97 93 90 87 83 80 77 73 70 60

We may adjust the scale to be more lenient, but we guarantee that the grade corresponding to a given percentage will not be lower than specified by the above scale. Your cumulative average will be the best of the following two weighted averages. In addition,  you must pass the final examination in order to pass the course. Note: Since there are no makeup exams, if you miss the midterm exam for any reason then your course grade will be computed with the final exam counting 80% of your grade.

Academic Dishonesty:  Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD.  Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university.  It is in your best interest to maintain your academic integrity.
